An RV being hooked up to a station with the best RV accessories

Best RV Accessories for a New RV Owners

Ready to hit the road in your brand new RV?  You won’t enjoy the trip if you’re missing the best RV accessories! Everything from making the camping trip easier to reducing headaches to maximizing your safety, these are the RV accessories every new RV owner and veteran can’t go without.

Leveling Blocks

Finding level ground in an RV campsite isn’t always easy. In fact, it’s not always possible. Many RVs come with leveling systems, but the easiest solution to get your RV in place is a set of RV leveling blocks.

Leveling blocks come in all forms. These simple blocks are placed on the ground to keep your RV stable even in the bumpiest of RV parks. They work by being stackable onto themselves. So while your front wheel may be fine, your back wheels may need one or two blocks to get them perfectly flat.

An RV must be level to be used properly. Primarily, it’s a matter of safety. You don’t want to leave your RV in a position where the RV itself isn’t stable, nor do you want many of your RV appliances to lean, like your fridge! RV leveling jacks are one of the best RV accessories because they’re almost always useful.

Sewer Hose Kit

Nobody likes dealing with RV waste. But it’s a lot easier when you have a reliable sewer hose kit that you know won’t leak or spill. Sewer hose kits can come with a variety of helpful little features, from swivel heads to easy-to-detach systems and even clear tubes that let you see when you’re done emptying the black tanks out of your RV.

Even if you trust the hoses you have, it’s always a good idea to have backup RV accessories like hoses. You never know when an accident can puncture one or cause you to leave one behind at a campsite. Without the hoses, you’ll be stuck with full tanks and parts of your RV that you just can’t use. That’s certainly not pleasant!

Surge Protector

Another common safety risk for your RV? Electronic surges! One reason RV owners love their RVs is the benefit of plugging in wherever you go and enjoying amenities on the road. Unfortunately, electricity can be a dangerous thing. The luxuries of your RV’s appliances can quickly turn into a nightmare if you experience a surge that causes damage.

A campsite with poor maintenance or damages hook-ups can lead to a surge that fries your equipment or does damage to the RV itself. The costs for repair can range in the hundreds to the thousands! Keeping your RV safe from this risk is as simple as investing in a surge protector.

Unlike home surge protectors which come in a single form, RV surge protectors can come in several different varieties:

  • Vehicle Mounted Surge Protectors
  • Hook-up Adapters
  • Built-in Electrical Monitoring Systems

No matter what you do, the important thing is that you take at least one step to protect your vehicle from a surge. The reality is that it can happen – and it commonly does it when you least expect it! Like defensive driving, you should always plan to be “defensive plugging” with electrical hook-ups that are public and potentially dangerous.

RV Power Adapters

Do you know the amperage for your RV? Do you know the amperage of the hook-ups you’ll be using at the campsite? The former you should definitely know, but the latter is always a toss-up!

An RV can’t be plugged in when the station doesn’t meet the right amperage for your vehicle. While many camps will be able to accommodate your RV, sometimes high-traffic or outdated campgrounds can leave you in a situation where your hookup doesn’t match your vehicle.

There are two major types of adapters to consider:

30 Amp to 50 Amp Adapter

If your RV requires 50 amps but the park only offers 30 amps, you won’t be able to benefit from it without an adapter. While a lower amperage still leaves your vehicle without all the power it needs, an adapter can give you the opportunity to benefit from some of your amenities instead of being forced to dry camp right next to a power station.

15 Amp Adapter

When away from the campgrounds, you may still want to benefit from your RV’s gadgets or just need to test them for common maintenance tasks. Unfortunately, your home isn’t likely built with an RV’s power needs in mind. However, a 15-amp adapter can close the gap and give you an opportunity plug in at home or elsewhere.

Just keep in mind to be safe and always follow instructions when using adapters like this. The difference power from a normal plug can affect what you can do and how you should use that power. Always be safe with electricity!

Portable Compressor

The last of the best RV accessories to have on hand is a portable compressor kit. Tires are the one thing that separates your vehicle from the road. And if they’re not in good condition, you can suffer all sorts of issues! Poor gas mileage, worn wheels and dangerous loss-of-control are all potential effects of low tire pressure.

RV veterans know that maintaining the proper inflation on your tires is a constant effort. You should be checking tire pressure frequently to make keep your RV safe. Like any vehicle, RV tires experience the same wear and tear from bumpy roads, shifting weather and everyday use. Over time, they will need to be inflated.

A portable compressor kit fits easily in your RV’s storage and gives you the opportunity to top off your tires whenever it’s needed. When you’re shopping for an air compressor for your RV, look for one with decently long cables to let you quickly hit each tire without having to constantly readjust the compressor’s position!
