Should I Buy a New or Used RV?

Top of woman's head with question marks aboveLet’s say you’ve made the decision to buy an RV. Congratulations! Now you get to make another decision: Should you buy a new RV or a used one? Deciding whether a new or used RV would work best for you depends on your needs and your travel plans. We can’t make that decision for you, but we can help you weigh the pros and cons of each.

Start making your decision by asking yourself a few important questions about your RVing resources, your camping crew, and your destinations. Here are a few suggestions:

Question #1 – How much money do I have to spend?

In almost every case, a new RV will cost you far more than a comparable used one. But remember that the purchase price is only part of the cost of owning an RV. Like any vehicle, an RV requires scheduled maintenance and sometimes unscheduled repairs. Used RVs are more likely to need repairs than new ones, and these repairs are seldom covered by a warranty. In the long run, a used RV may not be quite the bargain that you anticipated.

Question #2 – How long do I plan to keep my RV?

This question may be easier to answer if you think about your needs and the needs of your camping crew. Do you see those needs changing in a few years? For instance, will you be traveling with (more) children? Or do you see your camping family shrinking? In either case, your RV needs may change in the near future, so it might not make sense to invest in a brand-new model right now. On the other hand, if your camping crew remains relatively steady, a new RV will take you further down the road, so to speak.

Question #3 – How much will I be traveling?

Will you be a weekend warrior or marathon adventurer? If your camping travels consist mainly of weekend jaunts and the occasional extended vacation, you’re more likely to get your money’s worth with a used model. But if you’re planning extended trips – which is common for retirees – the fewer the miles on your RV the better. In this case, think new. After all, you’ll be putting plenty of miles on it yourself and you’ll want your RV to be up for the challenge.

Question #4 – How comfortable am I with making repairs?

Just as they are with any vehicle, repairs are a part of owning an RV. If you’re inexperienced with making vehicle repairs, or you just don’t like to do it, you’ll be better off investing in a new RV – one with a full warranty that starts as soon as you sign the purchase agreement. But if you don’t mind rolling up your sleeves, purchasing the parts and equipment, and doing the repairs yourself, you’ll probably save a substantial amount of money buying a used model. Remember that not all damage or wear and tear on an RV is visible. Check the RVs repair history before you buy and give it a good-once over before you finalize the deal.

Question #5 – Will I need/want any customization on my RV?

Your RV is your home on wheels, and customizing it is part of the fun. Many features you can customize on your own, especially if you’re handy with power tools or a sewing machine. But if you need or want significant changes, such as special layouts or custom upholstery, your best bet is to order a new RV.

Where do you go from here? Look around to find the makes and models that mesh with your camping needs, and jot down more questions as you continue your search. Online RV forums are a great place for information, and RV sales experts can direct you to the makes and models that will fit your needs.
