Protecting RVs from Hurricane Damage

Protecting Travel Trailers and RVs from Hurricane Damage

Ending in November, hurricane season is hardly over. In fact, we are just in the thick of it. Unfortunately for RV lovers on the coast, protecting homes and your families is not the only concern. After investing in a travel trailer, leaving it vulnerable for potential damage in a weather emergency is hardly a good decision. In fact, RVs can be even be helpful in such a catastrophe.

If you have to travel from your home because of a weather emergency threat, a travel trailer is a great option for comfortably transporting your family and your belongings to a safer area.

Of course, never drive your travel trailer through high waters or other dangerous conditions as any traveling vehicle can be vulnerable and dangerous. But, if you are not able to evacuate before the storm sets in, there are precautions you can take for protecting travel trailers and RVs.

Water damaged can take many shapes in the world of RVs. On this travel trailer water leaked in, pooling in the underbelly. Once it was fully saturated the now extremely heavy insulation pulled the bottom of the trailer right off!

As a rule of thumb, always keep your travel trailer parked on high ground. Flooding is a common byproduct of hurricanes and if flood waters seep into your RV it can cause serious damage. Mechanical failure, upholstery damage, mold, mildew, and soft floors, water damage can cause them all.

This decision should be made long before there is any threat of a hurricane, if evacuation is necessary you shouldn’t have to spend time moving your RV. As a principle, never leave your RV on low lying ground, especially if you live in areas prone to hurricanes or floods.

If you know inclement weather is on its way, secure your RV by tying it down with an RV hurricane strap kit. Doing this will protect against the high winds that come along with hurricanes, keeping your travel trailer held steady to the ground. This also keeps anything from being shaken or broken inside of the RV.

As an added measure of protection, remove any loose items or tree branches from the area as these could be caught by the wind and cause damage.
