The Pros & Cons of Luxury Travel Trailers

Some campers can’t wait to take a walk on the wild side. They’ll cast aside many of their earthly belongings and heed the call of the wild at a moment’s notice. Then there are those on the other side of the camping spectrum. They enjoy camping, but “roughing it” isn’t their style. For those campers, there are luxury travel trailers.cedar creek cottage luxury travel trailers by the lake

Luxury travel trailers are truly a home away from home. King-sized beds, residential furniture and appliances, entertainment centers, and even fireplaces are often standard equipment in these campground palaces. But all this luxury does come at a cost – both literally and in terms of trade-offs. Before you decide that a luxury travel trailer is the RV for you, carefully consider their advantages and disadvantages, then explore several different makes and models both online and in person. We’ve put together a few thought-starters to help you with your decision.

First, the Pros of Luxury Travel Trailers

Many campers who prefer extended stays at their favorite destination opt for luxury travel trailer instead of a cabin or hotel. Obviously, a luxury travel trailer is almost more affordable thana cabin. Along with the initial cost, you have to pay for the cabin’s property taxes and utilities. There’s also much less upkeep to trailer – no lawns to mow or other weekend home maintenance commitments. Plus, any cleaning or maintenance that needs to be done can be done at home – no travel required. And unlike a cabin, you’re not stuck in one place with a travel trailer. You can take your home with you to just about any destination.

Luxury travel trailers have benefits over a hotel stay, too. You can forget about check-out times and stay at your destination as long as you want without ever having to change rooms. Even at a high-end RV park, the daily camping rate would be significantly lower than a hotel stay. Another important factor is a sense of home and comfort. With a luxury travel trailer, you won’t have to live out of a suitcase; you can keep all your clothes in drawers and closets. You’ll also have your own bed, your own furniture, and your own food with you anywhere you go.

Comparing a luxury travel trailer to other types of campers, a luxury travel trailer will give you plenty of amenities and plenty of room. You’ll have large food storage and prep areas (most have residential-sized refrigerators and sinks, along with sizeable pantries). Many models have washer/dryer hookups, so you can avoid trips to the laundromat even during the longest vacations. Some, like the Vengeance toy hauler from Forest River, even have an attached garage that can be used to house ORVs or can be turned into a workshop so you can take your hobbies on the road!

Consider the Cons

However, there are some disadvantages to luxury travel trailers, too, and as you may expect, the first is the cost. Luxury comes with a price, and luxury travel trailers are at the high end of the RV spectrum. MSRPs for new models range from around $40,000 to the-sky’s-the-limit.

Pro tip: If your budget isn’t that accommodating, look for end-of-season deals or opt for a used model.

Another notable disadvantage is that you’ll need a towing vehicle powerful enough to pull a heavy, fully-equipped luxury travel trailer. If you don’t already own one, that can be a big investment. Then there’s the cost of fuel. These towing vehicles aren’t known for their fuel efficiency to begin with, but when you have a luxury travel trailer in tow, be prepared to spend a significant part of your vacation budget at the gas station.

You also need to factor in maneuverability. Luxury travel trailers tend to be long by RV standards; the combined length of a heavy-duty towing vehicle with a luxury travel trailer can reach 45’-50’. If you can confidently handle something this big though city traffic, gas stations, or wherever the road may take you, you’re good to go. If you’re not comfortable towing, maneuvering, or backing up these giant RVs, a smaller model or a fifth wheel, which tend to be more maneuverable, might be a better choice.

Finally, you have to think about storage. Where will you store your travel trailer when you’re not on the road or in the off season? Unless you have a huge yard and understanding neighbors, you’ll have to find a storage facility with ample parking room for your RV.

If you’ve considered all these factors and know that a luxury travel trailer is the perfect camper for you, what’s your next step? Check out a variety of makes and models in person. Spend an hour or so in each one, relaxing and getting comfortable with the layout and all the features. Come prepared with lots of questions, and bring a checklist with your must-haves and would-be-greats, along with plenty of room for notes on what you like – or don’t – about each model. And don’t limit yourself to just one visit. After all, you’re not just choosing an RV, you’re choosing a home away from home.
