4 Facts About Used RV Campers

Used, small RV travel trailerUsed RV campers are a popular choice for both novice and seasoned RVers at any budget. Prices range from million-dollar bus conversions that are just a couple years old to 30-year old “hunters’ specials” priced just under $3,000.

While it’s no secret that the cost savings of used RVs are substantial, there are some key factors to keep in mind before you sign the papers and start up your new-to-you RV home. Here are some things to keep in mind during your search:

Fact #1: RVs Are Homes; Shop Accordingly

While RV campers are similar to automobiles, they are truly homes. When shopping, it’s important to research and inspect with as much caution as you would a traditional home. In addition to the mechanics, you must inspect the plumbing, electrical systems, kitchen, appliances, bathrooms and sleeping areas.

Just like a traditional home, the condition of the living quarters is a key indicator to how the RV camper was cared for. If the interior is worn with damaged upholstery, paneling and cabinetry or appliances that do not work properly, then this is probably a sign that there may be larger mechanical issues. On the flip side, if the interior looks well kept and clean, then this is probably a sign that the RV camper was well taken care of overall.

After your initial inspection, you can dig deeper by purchasing a vehicle history report on rvchecks.com. The report may include recall notices, information on whether the vehicle has been damaged, rebuilt or stolen as well as manufacturer’s specifications.

Fact #2: Low Mileage Isn’t Always a Win

Contrary to popular belief, a used RV camper with low miles or low generator hours doesn’t mean it’s in good condition. Low mileage can be an indication that the vehicle may be prone to problems, is difficult to drive or has been sitting idle (and possibly stored improperly) for long periods of time. One of the worst things for any RV camper is to be parked and unused. This results in expensive repairs such as replacing belts, batteries, fuel pumps, tires and brakes. It can even require the carburetor on the generator to be rebuilt.

Another thing to look out for is RV campers with low mileage but high occupancy, which often leads to worn interiors with costly repair costs.

In his book “Buying a Used Motorhome,” Bill Myers recommends used RV campers with between 10,000 and 35,000 miles.

Fact #3: Location and Storage Matter

If you are in the market for a used RV camper in a region with extreme temperatures, it is important to pay attention to how the camper has been stored. If you’re in a state with harsh winters, you want to avoid RV campers that have been parked in a yard and buried in snow during the winter months. On the contrary, if a camper is left out in the sun, the extreme heat will cause a faded, chalky exterior and the upholstery in the living quarters will sun bleached, dull and brittle. All of these factors will lead to rapid depreciation in value.

Fact #4: A Private Party Purchase Isn’t Always the Best Deal

While private party sellers typically have lower prices, they may not provide the best value. When you buy from a private party, you take the risk of ending up with a lemon. Dealers often provide limited warranties and usually offer financing, even on older used RV campers. RV Wholesale Superstore conducts a detailed inspection of each RV in their used inventory and make repairs or disclose any issues up front.
