3 Tips for Selling Your RV

Line of RV travel trailers for saleWhen it comes to selling your RV, it pays to do your homework – literally. It may be daunting, but selling your RV yourself has advantages.

Here are three simple tips you can use to maximize the money you get for selling your RV. Note – these tips require a bit of research, elbow grease, and a few presentation skills (but we know you can do it!).

Tip #1: Do the Research

To get a realistic idea of what to can expect for your RV – your RV’s fair market value – you have several resources. These include (but aren’t limited to) online resources such as:

  • NADA RV guides
  • Craig’s List (in your area)
  • eBay Motors or similar online vehicle sales sites

Of course, there are many other resources for estimating fair market value. Do a little bit of legwork; the time you spend in research could payoff in cash.

Tip #2: Make a Great First Impression

Like everything else, it’s important to make a good first impression when selling your RV. That means you’ll need to put in some effort to make it shine.

Clean your RV inside and out; that includes the obvious and not-so-obvious places, like the air vents and tiny spaces around the driver’s console (cotton swabs or inexpensive craft paint brushes are great for this). Rent or borrow a steam cleaner and deep-clean the upholstery, carpets, and floor mats. Last but not least, turn your attention to the windows, mirrors, and driver’s console, they should be clean enough to pass the white-glove test.

Fix any small problems, like loose knobs or hinges. Make sure all the lights and electric hookups are working. Then add a few inexpensive finishing touches, such as small organizers or rugs. You don’t have to invest much money – you can find many of these items at discount or “dollar” stores. Finally, have routine maintenance (e.g. oil change and tire rotation) performed in advance to show that your RV is in great shape and ready to go.

Tip #3: Think – and Act – Like a Salesperson

This is your chance to put your sales skills in action. Don’t just let the buyer check out your RV on his/her own. Make a sales presentation. It doesn’t have to be lengthy or detailed, just long enough to point out the highlights.

Before your presentation, compile any important paperwork in advance, like the registration, insurance information, and owner’s manual. You’re going to need that for the sale, and it’s a great wrap-up for your pitch. As you walk them through your RV, point out any upgrades you’ve made and highlight strong selling features, like new tires. Remember that routine maintenance tip? Now’s the time to mention that your RV is up to dateand road ready.

You don’t have to invest a great deal of time or money to maximize the money you’ll get from selling your RV. Just a few tricks, a little work, and some research can make substantial difference in the result.
